Sascoc will foot the bill: Sam

Johannesburg - The SA Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) president Gideon Sam on Sunday poured cold water to media quashed reports suggesting that local swimmers, including gold medallist Chad Le Clos, will have to dig deep into their own pockets to travel to Spain for the Fina World Championships in June.

According to thenewage.co.za website, “It’s not true at all to say that the likes of Le Clos and others will be paying for their own flights and accommodation for the championships, which get underway on July 19,” said Sam.

“All the athletes who won medals or reached the finals during the 2012 London Olympics are still on our operation excellence plan, which is aimed at making sure that the athletes are being well looked after and Fina championships will be no exception.”

Swimming South Africa CEO Shaun Adriaanse confirmed that the federation would be sending the swimmers to Spain but they would have to pay for their own flights and accommodation for the championship starting on July 19.

The swimming federation lost their major sponsor last year as South African telecommunications company Telkom pulled the plug on their $1.25m (R11.55m) per year deal.

Adriaanse said the organisation has canvassed extensively for a new backer, but that there have been no takers.
