Sam takes on Komphela

Johannesburg - The head of South Africa's biggest sports organisation is taking on parliament's sports committee chairperson Butana Komphela, accusing him of bias towards disgraced athletics boss Leonard Chuene, according to a report on the Times Live.

Gideon Sam, president of the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), has said Komphela is the reason he refuses to appear before the committee, which wants the umbrella body to explain its investigation into Athletics SA (ASA).

Komphela  recently accused SASCOC of snubbing his committee and showing arrogance in its refusal to appear in Parliament.

But Sam hit back saying he was "not prepared" to appear while the committee was headed by Komphela.

Sam sent a letter to the committee earlier this month saying that the body would not present the forensic audit into the finances of ASA.

SASCOC said last month that it had laid charges against certain individuals from ASA as recommended in the forensic report.

Eight ASA board members, including its president Leonard Chuene, were suspended last November before the audit was completed.
