SA officials get London nod

Cape Town - South African hockey has been honoured by the appointment of Sheila Brown and Michelle Joubert as technical delegate and umpire respectively for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The announcement was made by International Hockey Federation (FIH) umpires development manager, Richard Wilson, at the world hockey governing body’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

This will be the Johannesburg-based Brown’s third appointment to an Olympic Games, while the Pretoria-based Joubert will be making her debut in the four-yearly showpiece event, which is the pinnacle of the game.

Brown has had a long and distinguished career in hockey administration in South Africa and among her many roles over the years is her current position as president of the Southern Gauteng Hockey Association, while she has also been vice-president of the sport’s national authority, the SA Hockey Association.

Joubert has risen rapidly up the world umpiring ladder and officiated in the Commonwealth Games final in New Delhi, India last year, as well as the 2010 World Cup finals in Rosario, Argentina.
