Sport24's newest columnist, Roland Schoeman (File)

Cape Town - Sport24 are proud to announce SA Olympic gold medallist and multiple world record holder, Roland Schoeman as our newest columnist.

Read Roland's first column HERE

Schoeman, a member of the ‘Golden Boys’ 4x100m freestyle relay team from the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, is now based in South Africa and his love for the country and his beloved Blue Bulls is motivation enough to keep on training for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Schoeman is excited about the prospect of getting stuck in to writing: "I just want to thank Sport24 for giving me this amazing opportunity. I guess only time will tell if I live up to expectation. This is my first ever experience as a columnist and I am unbelievably excited at the prospect. I'm grateful that Sport24 editor Andrew Lanning has allowed me to share my perspective on specifically swimming, training, but also virtually any other current exciting or relevant sporting topic.

“I guess the only thing else I can say is watch this space.”

Sport24 decided to ask our latest addition some burning questions to see whether he could cut it in the cut-throat journalistic world.

Sport24: When should one stop wearing a Speedo?
Roland: When you can’t see the Speedo anymore.

Sport24: Where would you rather be? Watching your beloved Blue Bulls in a VIP box at Loftus or watching the Qatar national football team in a crowd of 97 884?
Roland: Watching the Bulls at Loftus, don’t even have to think twice about that one.

Sport24: Who would you rather make dinner for? Dirk Lange or Luke Watson? And what would you cook?
Roland: Is Robert Mugabe an option? If he is then I’d make under-done chicken breasts.

Sport24: Finally, who is the hottest woman currently in world swimming?
Roland: There’s a Finnish girl, Hanna-Maria Seppala (http://www.hanna-maria.com/). Got to love the Finnish swimming federation!

Schoeman’s column will feature on Sport24 every second Tuesday, starting today, and users are encouraged to leave comments. Roland has promised to respond to the ones that don’t say anything bad about his beloved Bulls...

Well done Sport24. The appointment of this intelligent, talented young man who never shirks the critical need for independent and even challenging thinking is a real coup. We look forward to his column

Thanks for all the comments thus far. To Mike, the topic which you touched on will definitely be discussed in length in the next while. To DieSkot, when they talk about channels, they talk about the line you take relative to the bouy's and to the finish. You swim yourself out of contention by choosing the wrong line (adding more length to your swim) Speak to some of the open water guys, Chad Ho, Sean Dias etc they'll be able to give you a better idea on the right and wrong lines. To Dale..... No comment :P Looking forward to sharing stories with you guys Thanks for the continued support Roland Schoeman

I have a question about the Midmar Mile. I recently swam my first Midmar Mile and did fairly well, but I read in an article on the Midmar Mile website that there are various "channels" that you can swim in. Are there underwater channels that the water has created or am I missing something? What are they talking about? Last year's winner aparently swam himself out of contention during this year's event by choosing the incorrect channel. Can you please clarify this?

Great to hear you are part of the team. The first time I posted a comment was a couple of months ago over an article about a comment by Cameron van der Burgh. He basically said that the SA management at Beijing was not up to scratch, and this had affected his results negatively. There were lots of people writing in saying that "Cameron was making excuses" and the swimming team "had let the country down" etc. Anyway, let's just say that I was on Cameron's side on this one. I'd be interested to hear your take on the Beijing experience, but perhaps it's better not to bring it up again?
