Glasgow - Investec South Africa women’s hockey team beat world number 18 Scotland 5-2 on the back of Pietie Coetzee's four goals and an excellent Kate Woods strike after the scores were 2-1 at half-time in an entertaining fourth Test on Thursday.
The win gives South Africa a 3-0 lead in the five-Test series, with the fifth Test at 3.30 pm (SA time) Saturday. The first Test was a 2-2 draw with the second international 2-1 to South Africa and the third 4-2 to the girls in green and gold.
The 33-year-old Coetzee’s four top-class goals took her world record tally to an incredible 238 in 240 Test matches. Scotland scored through Ailsa Wyllie and captain Linda Clement.
SA scored three penalty corners – through Coetzee (two drag flicks) and Woods (slip left variation) - plus Coetzee’s pair of stunning field goals, one a reverse-stick effort after she found space from oustanding captain Marsha Marescia’s pass, and the second a phenomenal solo effort which she did all on her own, beginning with a self-pass from the touchline, followed by breathtaking close control and topped by a red-hot reverse-stick strike.
Both of Scotland’s goals came from PC deflections, the second a superb effort from Clement.
SA forward Kathleen Taylor was everywhere up front, gliding past defenders in indomitable fashion; Shelley Russell’s blistering pace down the left was a constant threat, while 2011 SA Player of the Year Tarryn Bright had an industrious game in midfield.
Scotland brought back influential captain Clement and retained third Test debutant Nicki Cochrane ahead of the equally in-form number one Amy Gibson in goal.
Investec SA included Coetzee, who came into the match with 234 goals in 239 Test matches, and fellow double Olympian Woods for the first time after they had joined the team Thursday and enjoyed two lengthy training sessions with the side in the build-up to this fourth Test.
Striker Lauren Penny (shoulder injury), who is being rested, and fellow sharpshooter Jen Wilson (ankle), both watched from the touchline. Scotland were missing their four Great Britain Olympic squad members.
