REVEALED: Rio Olympic and Paralympic medals

Cape Town - The Rio Olympic committee on Tuesday evening unveiled the medals for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio, which is scheduled to begin on August 5.

The new medals were introduced on the committee's official Twitter account, showcasing the gold, silver and bronze medals that will be won by the top athletes around the world at this year’s biggest sporting event.

An in-depth look to the Olympic medal sees the Rio 2016 logo with a ribbon engraved on the front.

The back side features the original Olympic Stadium in Athens along with the 31st Olympic Games written in Portuguese. On the side of the medal, the sport and event is engraved for personalisation.

The Paralympic medal looks completely different, as the front features “Rio 2016” engraved in Braille, along with the Rio 2016 logo and a leaf-like pattern etched along the corners of the medal.

According to Yahoo Sports, almost 5 000 medals were manufactured by the Brazilian Mint for the upcoming games.

The slogan for the Games - A New World - was announced, as the 2016 edition will be looking to build a new world from new eyes, new heroes, leading by example and breaking down barriers.

The podiums at the victory ceremony will be made out and decorated by two species of plants. At the victory ceremony, winners will receive their medal, a model of the Rio 2016 logo and a mascot.
