Cape Town - Former 400m world record holder, American Michael Johnson, has paid tribute to South Africa's Wayde van Niekerk.
Johnson, who set the 43.18 record back in 1999, was quick to congratulate Van Niekerk after his stunning gold medal-winning run at the Rio Olympics on Sunday (Monday morning SA time).
Running out of lane 8, Van Niekerk posted 43.03 to take the gold ahead of Grenada's Kirani James and American LaShawn Merritt.
Congratulations @WaydeDreamer to you and your coach! Well done and deserved. Olympic Gold and World record. I know the feeling! #Rio2016
