THAT'S A WRAP

Good day for our rowers, average day for the cyclists and a disappointing day for South Africa's swimmers in general, but Cameron van der Burgh will be in action in the 100m breaststroke semi-final at 4am on Sunday morning. Catch you then.

06 Aug 20:46

CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR

Excuse the cliche, but it's the truth. Meintjes didn't have enough left in the tank to challenge the top three in the final 5000 metres. Greg van Avermaet of Belgium, Jakob Fuglsang of Denmark and Rafal Majka of Poland take GOLDSILVER and BRONZE, respectively. Meintjes finishes seventh.

06 Aug 20:32

MEINTJES!!!!!!!!!

He's really in with a chance here, a a few crashes - Nibali, Henao - continue to seperate the men from the boys. Froome still upright. Majka in the lead. Meintjes currently sixth. Seven kms to go.

06 Aug 20:28

EITHER WAY, CAMERON/GRAEME HAS COME SECOND

Defending champions Cameron van der Burgh has come second, with a time of 59:35, in the men's 100m breaststroke heats. Will it be enough...? Yes, it is, he's into the semis - tomorrow at 4am SA time.

06 Aug 20:21

MEINTJES IMPEY, IMPEY MEINTJIES

They're both in the running now, with about 17kms to go. Plenty of others up front, too. This is neck and neck, as the men's road race cyclists chase gold.

22KMs TO GO...

DOWN TO THE WIRE

Meintjes had dropped back quite a bit, but Impey is making a big push with about 30kms to go in the men's cycling road race.

06 Aug 19:38

DON'T FORGET, RYAN PATTERSON...

...is still going, relatively strong, in the artistic gymnastics.

BROWN MISSES OUT ON FINAL BERTH

His second-place finish time in the heats earlier wasn't good enough to secure a spot in the 400m freestyle final. That adds to the Meyer and Rousseau double disappointment earlier. South Africa's last remaining hope in the pool today lie with Cameron van der Burgh, who will be in the 100m breastroke after 8pm.

06 Aug 19:21

AS FOR THE CYCLING...

Less than 50kms to go in the men's road race.

06 Aug 19:20

SECOND FOR BROWN!

Brown, in lane one, held the lead at the 200m mark, but ultimately slipped to second with a time of 3:45;92. Jordan Pothain of France won with 3:45;93. So Brown still in contention for a 400m freestyle final berth.

FALSE ALARM, THANKFULLY

Turns out it was just a controlled detonation of a suspiciously abandoned package.

SAD, BUT TRUE

Hopefully, Myles Brown will turn things around just now...

RUMOURS QUASHED

06 Aug 18:26

ROUSSEAU FLOPS, SOMEWHAT

Fifth-placed Meyer's time was 4:18;13 - and Rousseau is a touch slower, finishing stone last in this eight-man race.

06 Aug 18:15

OH DEAR

He's not out of it, but Meyer has finished a disappointing fifth in the second heat - a full five seconds behind Aussie winner Travis Mahoney.

06 Aug 18:00

TIME FOR SOME SWIMMING!

Michael Meyer and Sebastien Rousseau in the 400m individual medley first up in the heats, then Myles Brown in the freestyle - and later Cameron van der Burgh in the 100m breaststroke.

06 Aug 17:29

TOUCH'N'GO FOR PATTERSON

He needs to finish in the top 25 in order to clinch a berth in the overall final. He's 14th at the moment. Over in the men's road race, there's about 120km to go - Meintjes and Impey mid-bunch.

06 Aug 16:55
AT MIDNIGHT TONIGHT!

06 Aug 16:47

PATTERSON PROMOTED

A bit of a bump up the standings for the young man. He scored a 13.333 on the rings to finish 12th, so he's up to 15th in the overall standings.

06 Aug 16:28

MORE ON PATTERSON

Not great on the pommel horse. He finishes in eighth position, with a score of 13.033. He is second last over all. Perhaps things will look up on the rings.

06 Aug 16:10

ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS

SA's Ryan Patterson has scored a 14.300 in the floor exercise, coming third in sub-division one - men's qualifying. He'll be on the pommel horse next...

THE US HAVE THEIR FIRST GOLD!

06 Aug 15:55

SEMI-FINAL QUALIFICATION!

SA's Keeling and Brittain come second to the Aussies, with the Czech Republic in third. South Africa through to the semis!

06 Aug 15:32

BONUS FOR SA!

Dutch rider Tom Dumoulin has pulled out. He fractured his wrist during the Tour de France recently - and tried to ride through the pain here, but no go, so there is a boost for Meintjes and Impey. Let's see if they can capitalise...

06 Aug 15:20

WITH AND WITHOUT A PADDLE!

Not a hang of a lot to report from the men's cycling road race at the moment, other than Meintjes and Impey are still - thankfully - in contention. Six riders -  Kwiatkowski, Geschke, Bystrom, Albasini, Pantano and Kochetkov - with about 50 seconds on the pelton. Meanwhile, the rowing - first heat of the men's coxless pair, with Shaun Keeling and Lawrence Brittain - will start soon.Six riders in the front group: Kwiatkowski, Geschke, Bystrom, Albasini, Pantano and Kochetkov. They have 50-odd seconds on the peloton, who are having a cruise.

06 Aug 14:39

AND WE'RE OFF...

The men's cycling road race has started. Impey and Meintjes are in there somewhere. The men will be separated from the boys soon enough, for a clearer picture. About 230 kilometres to go - and counting down. Meanwhile, this from Team Great Britain - fronted by 2016 Tour de France winner Chris Froome...

06 Aug 13:39

ON YOUR BIKE!

Today's South African coverage kicks off with Daryl Impey and Louis Meintjes in the cycling - men's road race. Then onto the artistic gymnastics with Ryan Patterson - and later our swimmers, including young Michael Meyer and Sebastien Rousseau are in the pool for the 400m heats and hopefully the final. Lest we forget the rowing. Here's hoping, too, Banyana Banyana can overcome China in the women's football at midnight SA time...
