Kerber downs Keys to reach final

Rio - Germany’s Angelique Kerber booked her spot in the final of the women’s singles event at the Olympics on Thursday after beating USA’s Madison Keys 6-3, 7-5.

Kerber has enjoyed a highly successful year thus far as she won her maiden grand slam title at the Australian Open in January and also featured in the final of Wimbledon, where she lost to world number one Serena Williams.

Neither player gave anything away off their serve for the first six games of the first set, but Kerber ended that trend by breaking Keys in the seventh game.

The second seed went on to break Keys again in the ninth game to clinch the first set.

It was a similar story to start the second set as both players held serve for the first 11 games, which saw Kerber hold a narrow 6-5 lead. The German proceeded to break Keys in the 12th game and thus progressed to the final.

Kerber will face Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig in the final after she battled past two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

Puig broke Kvitova five times during their encounter and won 61 percent of points on her first serve. Kvitova also did herself no favours by committing 40 unforced errors.
