Irish boxer calls judges 'cheats'

Cape Town - Irish boxer Michael Conlan was furious in his post-match interview after a dubious defeat in the bantam 56kg quarter-final.

Conlan lost 3-0 to Russian opponent Vladimir Nikitin, and in his post-match interview insisted that the International Boxing Association (AIBA) judges were incorrect in their ruling.

"I will never box for them again," the 2012 bronze medallist told RTE website. "I'm here to win Olympic gold and my dream has been shattered.

"Amateur boxing stinks from the core right to the top. But you know what, I've got a great career ahead of me, but [the AIBA] are known for being cheats and they'll always be cheats."

Olympic boxing continues with the semi-finals on Thursday as Nikitin takes on Shakur Stevenson of the United States and Robeisy Ramirez Carrazana of Cuba faces Murodjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan.
