Nyahururu - Kenya's Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru was arraigned in court Thursday on charges of attempting to kill his wife and his watchman, police said.
The 24-year-old Kenyan and two-time Chicago marathon winner denied the charges of attempting to murder his wife Terezah Njeri Muturi when he appeared before the magistrate in Nyahururu town, in Central Kenya.
Police prosecutor John Rutto told the court that Wanjiru went to his home overnight while he was drunk and had a row with his wife.
"It was alleged that it was at this time that Wanjiru went and picked the rifle and attempted to shoot his wife and the watchman before they were rescued by neighbours responding to their distress calls," he added.
Rutto said police were called and immediately arrested the accused.
Wanjiru was, however released on bail until February 9 next year when the case will be heard.
Wanjiru became Kenya's first Olympic champion in Beijing in 2008, and at 21, the youngest marathon winner since 1932.
A twice World half marathon record holder and 2009 London marathon champion, he was crowned the men's 2009-2010 World Marathon Majors series champion following his back-to-back victories at the 2009 and 2010 Chicago Marathons.
