Mbalula's flight bill queried

2012-03-06 09:28

Johannesburg - Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and his deputy Gert Oosthuizen have taken more flights since 2010 than their counterparts in international relations, The Star reported on Tuesday.

They spent R2.6 million on 345 domestic and international flights since 2010.

That is 186 more flights than the minister and deputy minister of international relations and co-operation.

International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and her two deputies, Marius Fransman and Ebrahim Ebrahim, took a combined total of 159 domestic and international flights during the same period, said Democratic Alliance MP Winston Rabotapi, according to the publication.

In a reply in Parliament to questions by Rabotapi, Mbalula said that since April 1, 2010 Oosthuizen spent R1.1 million on 105 flights, including 29 international at a cost of R806 293.

Mbalula spent R747 410 on 16 international flights.

Rabotapi has asked that the chairperson of the committee on sport call Mbalula and Oosthuizen to explain their travel expenses.

He also intends asking the Public Protector to investigate the purpose and necessity of the flights, The Star reported.

What's the fuss all about... Sport ministry has been one of the most noticeable dept of late. To be visible to people, you must travel. Thuli has a lot on her plate, giv the protector a BREAK

  • Stan - 2012-03-06 09:43

at the expense of the poor

  • gennath - 2012-03-06 09:53

Good grief that's a lot of flying!!!

  • fcocquyt - 2012-03-06 10:05

I remember when Oosthuizen was nowhere in politics he use to come to Giovannis in Brooklyn Mall order a focacio and one drink not tip the waiter. Yes he may have worked himself up but spending so much on flights ? Wonder if he does tip the waiters these days ?

      Lindani - 2012-03-06 10:32

would come to Ocean Basket @ brooklyn square, buy a bottle of graca, fish and chips, stay till 11:30pm and neva tip no waiter.. i served him once!!

  • louwc - 2012-03-06 10:06

Be fair people. Since 2010, lets assume till en 2011 is 24 months. Combined its 45 International flights, which means one of them attented a major sporting event and or meetings once a month. Thats not so bad! Then look at local sporting events to make up for local flights. These guys jobs are called "oversight" and how can you oversee if you are not there? Being at sporting events where you can see sport in action, have a captive audience of all the sporting administrators to meet and talk with, handling prize givings is all part of it. If it is excesive, I say its not by much.

      lindaawhelan - 2012-03-06 10:25

But while they are performing "oversight" on various worldwide sporting events, our Olympic Swimming Team has no money for accommodation when they represent us in London. The Princess of Monaco had to step in and fund them. I'd rather spend the Sports budget on people who actually do sport than funding ministers to watch it.

      Foc - 2012-03-06 10:47

@Lindiwe I agree 100%.... some of the minor sports NEED funding so rather spend that money on development and transformation.... @louwc I bet they sit pretty in the spectator boxes drinking fancy champagne and caviar ... I have seen Oosthuizen ONLY once on the field with a prize giving ... so I dont buy your story

      dee.shabalala - 2012-03-06 11:10

the most dissapointing thing about this is we have a vibrant minister who has given us the energy back either then that duck Stofile, seriously for me Fikile has done a sterling job on the post, if these travels were indeed related to work, why not, lets not confuse confederations adn the ministry if @Lindiwe the swimming team doesnt have funds, look at Sascoc and ask them what happened, Fikile is a minister of sport which include Soccer, Rugby, Hockey, Swimming, et al, so ask you confederation president where they spent the money on........

      nhamo.dzenyika - 2012-03-06 12:38

tell them dee shabalala, some people are just obsessed with anything which has something to do with ANC government. To me Fikile Mbalula deserves every cent he has spent. He is the most hardworking minister of the modern day

  • Shirley - 2012-03-06 10:10

Just another minister who believes he is "entitled" to do as he pleases with tax payers monies! Living the high life and we work our butts off to pay for it!

  • Mhlonso - 2012-03-06 10:11

SA, ANC and DA constitutions need change. We cannot afford to have leaders who do not represent any Ward or Region. We have people that are seating in Legislator (National and Provincial) who do represent anybody. How is this allowed to happen. Who hold this people accountable. How can a person who has never been a Ward Councillor end up in the legislator. It is my belief that the way we vote in this country is flawed and it allowes faceless people to be voted into high offices.

  • Senzo Mathebula - 2012-03-06 10:27

Let's give the minister a break he needs to travel all over the world to carry out his duties effectively.

      Neville - 2012-03-06 10:43

Hi Senzo They had many breaks they break up everything they touch, And the poor stay poor how many houses can you build with that type of money and all the other money that they just take for their own pocket, did u c the houses in KZN the wind blow it away it is a disgrace ,most of you are blind

  • Rob - 2012-03-06 10:28

That is probably why Oosthuizen joined the anc. He realised here is the gravy train opportunity to travel the world for free. A sports minister or his deputy should not have to travel to every sports meeting. Every sports team has a team manager who has to hand in a report and that should be sufficient.

  • Richard - 2012-03-06 10:29

Maybe they should spend some money on one more trip to just fly away.

  • Dennis - 2012-03-06 10:30

Between these two there is not enough "brainpower" to inflate a lilo !!

  • Anton - 2012-03-06 10:31

that is R7.5k per flight, which at business and first class is not so bad. I am more disturbed about the carbon foot print of the ministry!

  • Melanie - 2012-03-06 10:39

its always sorta been a fantasy of mine to fly from joburg to durbs for lunch and then fly back...just for the hell of it and to say ive done it before i peg....but holy moly...this is overdoing it somewhat..

  • Emil - 2012-03-06 10:43

These guys just entertain the big corporates they dont bother about the small poorer communities. Ive writen to the Minister and received no reply

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-03-06 10:46

Let's find out what the outcome is first, you might just find that there is justification for this... but as usual the lip flappers are out on full force flapping like pregnant pigs.

  • gantshe - 2012-03-06 11:10

Atleast there is no racial comment on this story because the guys are 2 different race it shows how pathetic your comments are on issues that involve only a black person. Incase you dont know the flights are very costly depending on the season and this can lead to highre costs this people has to fly to make sure they attedn all this functions prior to 1994 nobody questioned anything that was done by the government then everyhting was all gospel. People need to realise that things has changed and will always change.People pretend like they care about the poor but they dont lets get educated and understand why things happen before we make judgements.

  • Chaapo - 2012-03-06 11:26

No wonder he has been fighting so hard for his pal, Malema - birds of a feather.

  • Stuart - 2012-03-06 14:26

As a tax-payer struggling to pay bit during the worst economic cycle in the last 80 years it totally pisses me off that this lot are allowed, nay encouraged, to waste money in this fashion. It apalls me that government departments are spanked if they do NOT spend everything they were allocated. What is wrong with us?
