Those people who criticised Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula over Floyd “Money” Mayweather were just jealous.
Mbalula said this in Parliament this morning.
“Let me tell you, Floyd Mayweather is my friend. I think you are jealous of that, that is your problem.”
Last month, Mbalula travelled to the United States to watch Mayweather’s big boxing match against Manny Pacquiao. The visit made headlines after he reacted aggressively on Twitter when he was asked who paid for his trip to Las Vegas.
Mbalula insisted he did not use tax money, but refused to say who footed the bill. Later, he addressed a media briefing at Parliament and said: “You’re fighting with me when I used my own money to go watch a fight. I did not use [the department of] sport’s money.”
In Mbalula’s speech before the National Council of Provinces he also responded to criticism that he was a “Beyoncé groupie”.
Mbalula has, more than once, tried to get the pop sensation to perform in South Africa at great expense.
