Cape Town - Sharks wunderkid Patrick Lambie continues his love affair with Sport24 readers as the 2010 overall winner of the Sport24 Performance of the Year walked away with June’s Performance of the Month Award for his marvellous versatility over the course of successive weekends, leading the Sharks to the Super Rugby finals series.

The Durban youngster, with 38.58% of the 1 755 votes held off some experienced competition in South African women’s hockey star Pietie Coetzee, who earned 32.88% of the votes, after she powered her way to the world Test record of 220 goals. She ended the Champions Challenge on 225 goals from 227 Tests – only a fraction under a goal a game.
South Africa’s long jump king Khotso Mokoena leaped into third spot with 16.01% of the votes for his gold medal leap of 8.08m at the Oslo Bislett Games, a Diamond League event.
Now, everyone likes a good moan about referees and Pro Legoete is not the first ref to face the wrath of the Sport24 readers in the Plonker of the Month category (28.15% of the votes), and he surely won’t be the last either. This time round, the assistant referee incurred Aussie wrath when he was involved in “miscommunication” with match referee Craig Joubert during the Bulls v Waratahs Super Rugby match at Loftus, which resulted in visiting lock Pat O’Connor being red-carded for an apparent head-butt. O’Connor was later exonerated by SANZAR, after no evidence of such an offence was found.
It was a touch-line call between second and third place but after a television replay, SARU sneaked into second place (26.15%) over the confusion regarding the composition of their preliminary Bok training/planning squads for the World Cup. A hugely expansive 51-strong party was named in April, only for it to be whittled down to 37 in early June ... before swelling up once again to 49 a few days later – all very confusing, even for those players named in that squad. Butch James, who received 26.10% of the votes for one of his infamous high tackles on one of his former team-mates, Sharks’ Keegan Daniel, was edged in to third place.
