Nkabiti dies after fight with Baloyi

Brakpan - Herbert Nkabiti of Botswana has died following a head injury during his fight with junior-welterweight Willis Baloyi at Carnival City near Brakpan on Friday night.

It has been reported that he collapsed in the ring after being stopped in the sixth round and died in hospital during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Trained by Manny Fernandes, Nkabiti, who was born on March 27 1981, represented Botswana at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in the 64 kg class and won his first fight on a countback against Cessaire Rivan from the Cameroon, after they finished with scores of 19-19.

In his second fight he was stopped in the second round by James Russan of England who went on to win the gold medal.

Nkabiti won a silver medal in the junior-welterweight division at the 2007 All-Africa Games after scoring victories over Rasheed Lawal and Rachid Tariket, but lost in the final to Hastings Bwala.

After failing to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing he decided to join the professional ranks on May 9 2009, winning his pro debut on a first round stoppage against Massande Kakaza at Turffontein, Johannesburg.

He won his next six fights inside the distance before fighting to a four round draw against Zan Jonker in April 2013. In his next fight he scored an impressive fifth round technical knockout over Anelisa Gunqisa in Mdantsane.

Nkabiti lost his next two fights inside the distance against Boitshepo Mandawe (tko 5) and Paul Kamanga who smashed him to defeat inside the first round.

He only had one fight in 2016 at the Mdantsane Indoor Centre near East London, a second round stoppage win over Goodman Zanempi on December 4, before the sad defeat against Baloyi at Carnival City on Friday night.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
