SA swimmers excel in Doha

Doha - A stellar night for the South African swimming team, as they claimed six medals (four gold, one silver and one bronze) during the opening day of the Fina/airweave Swimming World Cup’s Doha leg.

Chad le Clos was victorious on three occasions, bringing home the gold in the 200m butterfly with a time of 1:55.80, while the silver went to Denmark’s Viktor Bromer in 1:56.30 and the bronze to Australia’s Christopher Wright in 1:57.03.

In the 100m freestyle, Le Clos’ time of 48.96 won him the race title, over a second ahead of Argentina’s Federico Grabich in 49.39 and France’s Jeremy Stravius in 49.42. SA’s Caydon Muller came 4th in 49.63 and Douglas Erasmus 8th in 50.10.

The Durbanite concluded the first day with a gold medal in the 50m butterfly, clocking 23.43 to Giles Smith’s 23.58 (USA) and Ivan Lender’s 23.87 (Serbia).

Cameron van der Burgh was once again on point in the 50m breaststroke, winning the race in a fast 26.96 while teammate Giulio Zorzi claimed the silver in 27.69.

Van der Burgh also made his way to the medal podium in the 200m breaststroke, scooping the bronze medal in 2:12.14. Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta walked away with the gold in 2:10.33 and Russia’s Oleg Kostin with the silver in 2:11.44. Jarred Crous finished 8th in the event with a time of 2:15.47.

In other results, Jacques van Wyk ended 8th in the 100m backstroke final in 56.72, while Michael Meyer and Ayrton Sweeney came 5th and 6th in the 400m individual medley in 4:24.12 and 4:28.07 respectively.
