Simba knocks down Dube

Johannesburg - Heavyweight boxer Flo Simba restored his image when he knocked out Thamsanqa Dube in the third round at Kempton Park on Monday night.

A huge right hand by the popular and promising heavyweight sent the overweight Zimbabwean to the canvas and the count was over 2 minutes 10 seconds into the round.

The fight, scheduled for eight rounds at Emperors Palace, gave Simba the opportunity to atone for his recent knockout loss to Francois Botha, and he seized it well.

Dube did not land more than maybe two blows and posed little more of a threat than a super-sized punch bag would have.

Simba, with a weight disadvantage of almost 25 kg, first enjoyed some target practice against the 122kg Dube before he planted the right behind the visitor’s ear.

Earlier, it was a matter of “tit for tat, you kick my dog I bite your cat” as Ryno Liebenberg and Michael van Heerden won undercard brawls that they came close to losing.

Van Heerden was knocked down and nearly out in the first minute of his light-heavyweight scrap against Tsepang Mohale. The next moment Mohale was down, listening to the referee counting.

Mohale, a former SA champion, then built up a useful points lead before Liebenberg knocked him cold with booming right. The count was over three seconds before the scheduled end of the six-rounder.

In another six-round affair that produced enough blood to spoil the pleasant part of the box-and-dine show, junior middleweight Van Heerden beat Sylvester Zaki on points after taking a good beating himself. The scores were 58-54, 58-55 and 59-53.

Zaki was bleeding from a deep cut above the right eye from the second round and Van Heerden leaked from the nose for most of the fight.

Zaki took a count in the third and was docked a point for illegal tactics in the fifth after Van Heerden came close to being stopped in the opening round.

Warren Joubert, who was also taking punishment in his fight against Raymond Kapula, stopped his opponent 1 minute 53 seconds into the sixth round.
