Cape Town - The first of our monthly Everyday Sporting Heroes awards goes to Ronnie Pilowski.
Ronnie was nominated by Daniel Gillespie with the following motivation:
“Ronnie has just ended his 50th (yes, 50!) season as a cricket umpire. He has served tirelessly for the Western Province Cricket Umpires Association for longer than most of us have been alive, and continues to stand every weekend, rain or shine. Not only that, but he organises every umpire for every game in the top seven leagues in Western Province every weekend. Ronnie may be retired from his 'day job' but he still works full time to ensure that the fixtures have the correct umpires. In addition to that, Ronnie also spends most of his free time training new umpires, and imparting 50 years of knowledge of the laws of cricket. He is most definitely an Everyday Sporting Hero!”
That’s what makes an Everyday Sporting Hero, an unsung hero, a person who doesn’t usually get the recognition that he/she deserves.
We have had some nominations for the likes of John Smit and Morne Steyn. Sure these guys are sporting heroes but NOT your Everyday Sporting Hero.
We’re looking for an inspirational aunt who does 5km walks with her niece and nephew, an evergreen grandfather who practices in the cricket nets with his grandchild or a mother and father who lift their children to their weekly sporting activities. These are Everyday Sporting Heroes.
Nominate your Everyday Sporting Hero and stand a chance of winning R1 000 each month for you and your nominee. Then spread the word and get voting and your nominee could win the overall prize of R10 000 in October 2010.
The process to nominate your Everyday Sporting Hero is simple, all you have to do is register, upload a picture and a paragraph about your nominee and you are good to go.
