Evander accused of hitting wife

Atlanta - Evander Holyfield's wife is accusing the former heavyweight champion of hitting her several times and has received a temporary protective order against him.

Candi Holyfield claims her 47-year-old husband hit her in the face and on the back of the head and her back on February 1 at the couple's home in Fayetteville, just south of Atlanta.

She claims she was hit when she refused to show him cheque stubs of her payments to the church.

Evander Holyfield did not return several phone calls seeking comment. A publicist for the couple said in an e-mail that the two remained a strong married couple.

A judge has ordered Holyfield to stay at least 500 meters from his wife and their two children. A hearing is set for February 18.

Holyfield's fight against South African Francois Botha, to be held in Uganda on Gebruary 20, was been called off last month.

The bout is now expected to be on March 6, possibly in Miami.

However, Holyfield is also expected to face New York's Derric Rossy on April 24 in Las Vegas.

Holyfield, whose record stands at 42-10-2, has lost five of his last nine bouts, and has not fought since losing a points decision to Nikolai Valuev a year ago.
