Erin Burger wins Sport24 award

Cape Town - To highlight the fact that Netball South Africa is back on track, Erin Burger, who scooped the Player of the Tournament award at the conclusion of the World Netball Championships in Singapore - an event where the South African team consolidated their No 1 ranking in Africa with a fifth-place finish - won the Sport24 Performance of the Month for July.

Burger, with 35.94% of the 2 518 votes, pipped inspirational athlete Oscar Pistorius (31.02%), who realised his dream of running at the able-bodied Olympics and the IAAF World Athletics Championships, by posting the qualification time needed to book his spot on the team.

Jordy Smith, with 16.76% of the votes, came in third place for successfully defending his title at the Billabong Pro at Jeffreys Bay in front of a raucous, yet adoring crowd.

As the Springboks prepare to defend their World Cup title, Victor Matfield will no doubt regret tweeting a picture of himself and team-mate Fourie du Preez standing over a bloodied zebra they had just shot and killed on a hunting trip while they were supposedly ‘injured’ during the Tri-Nations.

This error in judgement earned Matfield 41.38% of the votes for Plonker of the Month, ahead of the Stormers front row of Brok Harris, Tiaan Liebenberg and Wicus Blaauw, who received 23.51% of the votes for their capitulation in the scrums against the Crusaders in their Super Rugby semi-final at Newlands.

Speaking of that ‘injury list’ of Bok players, SARU (16.24%) took some major flack for not sending out a simple press release clarifying the Rustenburg “training camp”, a few days before they were accused of breaching their contract with SANZAR.
