Els wins Sport24 award

Cape Town - Ernie Els had been missing from the winner’s podium for two years but he returned to his rightful place not once, but twice, in as many weeks on the PGA Tour. Success at the WGC-CA Championship was followed by a rain-delayed win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, earning the ‘Big Easy’ the Sport24 Performance of the Month with 51.38% of the votes.

Eagles batsman Rilee Rossow came in second with 31.55% of the votes after he rewrote the record books in the SuperSport Series match against the Titans at Centurion, becoming the only player to score 300 runs in a day in South Africa. Sharks scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar took third with 9.22% of the votes after he gave his team reason to cheer by booting a 48m match-winning penalty in the dying seconds of their Super 14 clash against the Hurricanes in Wellington.

In the Sport24 Plonker of the Month category, the SABC, with 28.66% of the votes, walked away with the award this month for their coverage of the 2010 Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour which was headlined by Lance Armstrong. It was a perfect opportunity to show South Africa they can indeed cover a big sporting event but they bombed big time! Sure the wind may have made things difficult, but what was dished up boarded on amateurish at best.

SA cricket stars Graeme Smith and Mark Boucher ‘ran’ away with second place with 24.83% of the votes. Said to be suffering from hand and back injuries respectively, ruling them out of the Pro20 semi-final between the Cape Cobras and the Warriors, instead of supporting their respective teams at Newlands, Smith and Boucher were to be found competing in a 10km run along the Sea Point Promenade. Better than munching on the sponsor’s fried drumsticks, we know, but not very supportive nevertheless.

Jomo Cosmos supremo, Jomo Sono, would have taken third place in the PSL any day but he had  to be happy with 3rd spot in the Plonker of the Month category after his unsuccessful quest to keep his team in the top-flight PSL after being promoted the season before. Perhaps time to invest in a top-class foreign coach Jomo?
