Johannesburg - Brazilian surfer Adriano de Souza was delighted after he won the Billabong Pro in Jeffreys Bay on Friday.
De Souza defeated French surfer Joan Duru in small and difficult conditions in the final with a polished and dynamic display of small-wave surfing.
"I've come to South Africa and to Jeffreys Bay for so many years, and have always seen the guys win the Billabong Pro, and now it's my turn," De Souza said.
"I'm just so happy, and I'm going to remember this win for my whole life.
"J-Bay is a special place for me and hopefully [I will] see you again next year."
Defending champion Jordy Smith of South Africa was involved in the first surprise of the day when he was eliminated by in-form Frenchman Joan Duru.
Smith battled to find high-scoring waves in the conditions, while Duru rode with confidence to progress.
Another South African, Dale Staples, caused an upset of his own when he defeated American John John Florence.
Staples was eventually knocked out by Aritz Aranburu in the quarter-finals, finishing as the highest placed South African in the event.
