Jacobs wins Sport24 award

Cape Town - Things just get better and better for Warriors skipper Davy Jacobs, who added the Sport24 Performance of the Month for September to his ever-growing list of accolades. Jacobs, who received 49.60% of the 6 240 votes, led from the front as he captained the Warriors to the final of the Champions League Twenty20. Jacobs ended the tournament as the second highest run scorer, with his 286 runs in six innings’ coming at an average of 47.66.

The Lions’ young flyhalf sensation, Elton Jantjies, grabbed second spot with 32.70% of the votes for his part in the improved fortunes of the Johannesburg team over the second half of this year’s Currie Cup, while Morne Steyn came in third with 13.64% of the votes as he continued to rewrite the record books in an otherwise forgettable Tri-Nations for the Boks. The Bok deadeye-dick took his tally of consecutive successful kicks at goal to a staggering 38.

While Davy Jacobs’s star seemingly to be on the rise, the Rose brothers’ stars seem to be waning – winning the Sport24 Plonker of the Month with 37.77% of the readers’ votes. Deemed surplus to requirements by John Mitchell and the Lions, Earl Rose first gave the Leopards the middle finger as a loan player, then roped his younger brother Jody into deserting the Lions at the Platinum International Sevens Tournament, returning to Johannesburg without permission.

Another sports star who has not been shy of controversy throughout his career, Andre Nel, wriggled his way into second place with 35.69% of the votes for his latest shenanigans. After returning from playing county cricket in London, he was bust by his 34-year-old lover, Jelena Kultiasova, for not telling her he was married in the two weeks they were together in London. Kultiasova said she discovered Nel was married through the internet, only after he had left London. It’s unusual to find Bryan Habana in the plonker category, but he did come in third with 12.98% of the votes for a series of seriously inept performances in the Tri-Nations.
