Tony Martin wins at Criterium

Grenoble - Tony Martin of Germany won the third stage of the Criterium du Dauphine on Wednesday, and Bradley Wiggins of Britain took the overall lead.

Martin completed the 42.5-km time trial around Grenoble in 55 minutes, 27 seconds.

Wiggins finished second, 11 seconds back to claim the yellow jersey from Alexandre Vinokourov of Kazakhstan.

"I'm very satisfied with the way I rode," Martin said. "The weather conditions I got were really good. The two climbs are pretty hard but I was lucky to have a tailwind. I also rode a good downhill at the end."

Edvald Hagen of Norway took third place, 43 seconds back.

Cadel Evans of Australia was placed sixth, 1:20 back, but climbed to second place in the overall standings.

Defending champion Janez Brajkovic of Slovenia finished fifth in the time-trial but jumped to third place overall.

At the 15-km mark, Martin led David Zabriskie of the United States by 17 seconds. The German time-trial specialist reached the second intermediary check in the same time as Wiggins, who clocked the best time at the 27.5-km mark.

On Thursday, riders have a 173.5-km trek from La Motte-Servolex to Macon.

The race ends on Sunday.

Riders often use the Dauphine as a warmup for the Tour de France, and Wednesday's time-trial is the same as the penultimate stage of this year's Tour.

"It's a really good test because when you do it the first time, you can also make some mistakes," Martin said. "So you know for the second time, when it's really super important at the Tour de France, you don't make maybe the same mistakes again. You can learn a lot about the course."

Martin won the Paris-Nice and Tour of Algarve stage races this year.
