Hushovd out of Tour de France

Paris - Veteran rider Thor Hushovd will not compete in the Tour de France this year as he is still recovering from a viral infection.

At last year's Tour, the 34-year-old Norwegian wore the race leader's yellow jersey for seven days and won two stages. He also won the green jersey for best sprinter in 2005 and 2009.

Hushovd's BMC Racing team said on Monday that Hushovd will instead aim to participate in the Tour of Poland, which starts on July 10. The Tour starts on June 30.

Hushovd has not raced since withdrawing from the Giro d'Italia after the fifth stage early last month.

BMC sporting director John Lelangue says that "after evaluating everything, we think this programme will better help him meet his own goals."
