Johannesburg - South African cyclist Herman Fouche says defending the Cape Argus is his main objective for the 2014 season.

Fouche claimed his maiden victory at the Argus cycle race last year, outsprinting Tyler Day and fellow team-mate Christoff van Heerden to the line.

“My big objective is to win the Argus again this year," Fouche said.

“That is a very special race for me and I love taking part in it, so I really hope to successfully defend my title.

“I have been chasing an Argus win since 2011, where I finished third. In 2012, I came second and finally I won it last year and will make sure that I keep winning it.”

While Fouche may have his sights firmly set on his title defence, the Bonitas rider said he also had other ambitions for the season.

"I really would like to do well for my team this year because they have shown me great support.

"It would be great to win all the big three's this year - the Argus, Amashova and Momentum - and it's going to be a great challenge to do so.

"I would also like to win the SA road champs and put those green and gold stripes on my shirt."

Fouche said he hoped to keep the momentum going into the new year after enjoying a great 2013 season.

The 26-year old sprinter kicked off his season last year with a win at the Krugersdorp Classic, which was followed by his Argus win.

He went on to spent three months racing in Europe with French team Martigues SC-Vivelo, where he gained valuable experience as a power rider.

On his return, Fouche won his second straight win in the Bestmed Campus2Campus Super Classic in Potchefstroom.

He then wrapped up the season with a second place finish at the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge in Johannesburg.

While Fouche admitted he was currently not in top form after having enjoyed the holiday break, he was keen to get back to his best form as soon as possible.

“I have been doing a lot of work since back training just to make sure that I'm in shape before my first race later this month, which has a lot of downhills.

“I've worked on my base and have been building from there. I feel comfortable with my form at the moment and will just keep working hard.”
