Verona - Medical exams on Giro d'Italia overall leader Taylor Phinney's injured right ankle have revealed no broken bones.

The BMC team says the American rider did require three stitches to close a wound on his ankle after crashing at the end of Monday's third stage in Denmark.

Tuesday is a rest day before the race resumes with a 33-kilometer (21-mile) team time trial in Verona.

In an overnight statement BMC team physician Dario Spinelli says, "We'll take another look at his ankle later on Tuesday and see how it's healing. It's definitely good that this happened before a rest day, since the transport and treatment process took so long."

Depending on Phinney's condition, BMC could be among the contenders in Wednesday's time trial.

World champion Mark Cavendish also crashed on Monday.
