Madrid - Italy's Alessandro Petacchi pulled out of the Tour of Spain during the ninth stage due to injury on Sunday, a day after he was caught up in a fall involving a number of leading riders.

The veteran Lampre rider abandoned the stage about 50 kilometres into the 187.7km ride between Calpe and Alcoy in southeastern Spain, organisers said.

"I am in pieces. My arm is very sore, I slept badly and my morale is low. I don't know how far I could go in this stage," the 36-year-old told reporters before the start of the stage.

Petacchi completed the eighth stage of the Tour of Spain with a badly torn outfit and was able to finish only in 124th place.

He won the seventh stage of the race on Friday, the 20th Vuelta stage win of his career.
