Nieve wins Vuelta 16th stage

Cotobello - Spain's Mikel Nieve won the 16th and toughest mountain stage of the Tour of Spain on Monday and compatriot Joaquim Rodriguez took the overall lead.

Nieve broke away from a five-man group eight kilometres from the Asturias summit finish of Cotobello just over a minute ahead of Frank Schleck of Luxemberg, with Belgium's Kevin de Weert third.

Rodriguez attacked late on the climb at the end of the 181 km stage to reclaim the lead he held for one day earlier in the tour.
