Moolman wins Die Burger

Stellenbosch - Daikin-GU ended the cycling season on a high note, following team captain Moolman Welgemoed’s victory at Die Burger Cycle Tour today.

The first lady to cross the finish line was Swedish cycling sensation Jennie Stenerhag (Alpha Pharm), thereby securing her fourth consecutive win at Die Burger Cycle Tour. Veteran Cathy Carstens (Token) and Maroesjka Matthee (Intellibus) finished in second and third place respectively.

“I broke away with Rob Quinn (RSAWEB) and Tredoux Odendaal (Cape Town Market) after 20km. Cycling conditions were great - we had a tail wind to just before Nelson’s Creek. I knew the finish quite well from two years ago, when my team mate David Garrett won,” explained Welgemoed.

Just over 6,500 cyclists entered the event, with the vast majority participating in the 98km road distance, the final seeding opportunity for the 2011 Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour.

Very popular

Stellenbosch High School played host to the fourth Die Burger Cycle Tour. David Bellairs, CEO of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, said the event was a great success: "Our new 15km route proved to be very popular and I’m thrilled to see so many families here today. We received lots of positive feedback about today’s event – it’s a wonderful way to end the year.”

"I tackled the 44km with my daughter Helene. I’m actually a mountain biker, but we had lots of fun,” said Bun Booyens, editor of Die Burger.
