Cape Town - Team Medscheme’s Malcolm Lange outsprinted a high quality breakaway group to win the 109km 2010 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour in Cape Town on Sunday.

South African champion, Christoff van Heerden (MTN Energade) finished second with Daryl Impey (Team Radioshack) third.

The decisive break of 12 riders moved clear of the large peloton with 36km remaining, just before the climb of Chapman’s Peak.

The move contained seven-time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong who was riding in support of his Radioshack team-mate, Impey, a fast sprinter.

Lange’s Medscheme team rode a tactically brilliant race, forcing the front group to split in the strong crosswinds and getting Lange, Johann Rabie and Nicholas White into the break along with nine other riders.

“That was our pre-race plan. We decided to use the wind to our advantage and try and split the race up just before Chapman’s Peak. I know that my chances of a winning are best from small group and that suited us perfectly,” said an elated Lange afterwards.

Joining the Medscheme trio in the break were David George, Rene Hasselbacher (both safindit.co.za), Dean Edwards, Tiaan Kannemeyer (both House of Paint), Armstrong, Impey (both Team Radioshack), Burry Stander (Team Specialized), Bjorn Glasner (Team Kuota) and Van Heerden (MTN Energade).

As the break reached the final kilometre, Armstrong put in a strong attack. But the strength of the headwind nullified any effect that may have had. Edwards, a powerful track sprinter then hit the front but it was also too soon and Lange moved out from his slipstream with 150m to go to win by more than a bike length in a time of two hours 39 minutes and 55 seconds.

“I was inspired to win today. Our team-mate, Arran Brown, won last year and is out injured, so we really wanted to defend the title for the team,” beamed Lange. “I owe this win to my team. They were brilliant and we rode a tactically perfect race!”

It was Lange’s third victory in the event. His other wins came in 1998 and 2003. It was the 407th win in his career, which has spanned 19 years.

With 35 000 participants, the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour is the world’s largest cycle race. The conditions were sunny but windy.

However the wind wasn’t as strong as it was in 2009 when just over half the field managed to finish.

I feel sorry for those who don't believe in this sport and those that cycle. Lance might or might not win the tour this year, but he performed briliantly and earned a respectable position been the oldest participant in the TDF. Lance is a symbol to many, hope that they to can come out of their situations better than when they went in, even if it's not cancer. Sorry you guys don't believe in something. As for you Greg, just because Lance read you and treated you bad, .......don't cry about it here, GFY

Lol...nobody has heard of anyone who has done 2.48. Its a bloody fast time and Greg is obviously a very fit guy, but lots of novice riders can attain that time with good training and the right genes.Anyway...moving on, this is boring
@Greg3/15/2010 9:34 AM
If you are so good, how come nobody has ever heard about you? Probably to busy "bumping" things... With you attitude, I wonder who the real dork is?
LOL3/15/2010 9:28 AM
Greg... really now... you probably just checked what this year's winning time was & added 10 minute to it... LOL... and the half marathon time... don't buy that either... you probably went to google half marathon times & again... added 10 minutes to it! LOL... Oh, & how old are you anyway... "can you lick that" really now! If you have to brag about... it probably didn't happen! with that said... i'm not sharing my half marathon time... :) hee hee hee... but... Greg, shame for you... it was faster than your! :P I'm not a cyclist, but I do know the sport... I agree with Richard who said that Lance is not a spinter, and Steve who said that he never came here to win it... Give the man the respect he deserves, he's done for cycling...

Let's see how well Lange would fare in the French Alps come July... You people seem to think Armstrong should win every discipline in every race. He never came here to win the Argus... Greg, have you ever finished the Argus with a top ten placing, if not, maybe you should hold your tongue. This man has done more for cycling than your 2h48m best time...
Greg3/15/2010 7:44 AM
Did the Argus twice, first time when i was 14 in 1987, it poured with rain and i did it on my Raleigh 12 speed. Second time round did 2.48 on a fairly crap bike but a lot better than the Raleigh. Did it alonbe, no pelaton. There you go Danile...Have also ran a half marathon in 79mins. Can you lick that?

Greg / Exc Tr., If you small minded clowns had HALF the guts Lance has to have achieved all he has, you'd be better for it. Clearly you're not into sport but take great enjoyment in harping on the negative aspects of others.

@ExlTrn: Get ready to eat your shorts
daniel3/14/2010 3:00 PM
greg.... bet you do not know what a bicycle looks like!
Dan3/14/2010 2:33 PM
Greg, I assume you were the customs official??? Instead of getting a passport, you rather get a bicycle.
King Lance3/14/2010 2:25 PM
Well said Richard. Lance showed his class by working for his young team mate. Wait for July, nothing beats experience. Dont bump into peple Greg, its irritating.
Richard3/14/2010 1:30 PM
Clearly you lack any real understanding of cycling. Lance is not a sprinter. The chance of a break away succeeding on a relatively flat race is very remote. Lance was never going to win it.
Deon3/14/2010 12:55 PM
Lance has finally participated in a REAL cycle race!
Exclusive Transfers3/14/2010 12:12 PM
Lance is done for...his days were always numbered but those numbers are up. I will eat my shorts if he will end in the top 10 classification in this years TDF
Greg3/14/2010 11:26 AM
Yeeeeehaa..glad the SA boys put Lance , the pre madonna in his place. What a complete, gold digger. Bumped into him the other day and he was less than friendly. Next time travel with a valid passport, Lance(dork).
