Inquiry into mechanical doping

Rome - An Italian prosecutor has opened an investigation into allegations of so-called mechanical doping - or motorised bikes that could help cyclists cheat.

The ANSA news agency reported that Turin-based prosecutor Raffaele Guariniello had opened a sporting fraud investigation.

Guariniello has previously led several high-profile probes on doping and other sporting frauds.

Last month, former professional cyclist Davide Cassani said he has tested a motorised bike that could help a rider cheat.

Cassani's reports for Italian television have fuelled speculation that mechanical doping could rival performance-enhancing drugs as a threat to the sport.
