Paris - Angelo Zomegnan has left his role as director of the Giro d'Italia, race organisers RCS announced on Tuesday.
The former Gazzetta dello Sport journalist had been the Giro's race director for the last seven years and will be replaced by RCS Sport director general Michele Acquarone.
Mauro Vegni, Stefano Allocchio and Alessandro Gianelli will retain their positions on the race organising committee.
During the Zomegnan era, the Giro became a more spectacular event, notably over the past two years, and even attracted criticism for breaching certain sporting limits.
Aside from the Tour of Italy, in May, RCS also organises two of the principal classics, Milan-San Remo in March and the Tour of Lombardy in October, as well as other races including the Tirreno-Adriatico.
