Cycling SA unveils 2020 vision

Johannesburg - Cycling South Africa today revealed its new strategic plan for the next few years, as well as news of anticipated events including the Tour of South Africa.

The strategy, "2020 Vision", will cater for both the 'elite' cyclist as well as the everyday two-wheel lover.

"The highly impressive plan, backed by all key cycling stakeholders in South Africa, will see Cycling SA take back full control of the sport in the country. Cycling is more than just a sport, it is a lifestyle, which has shown considerable growth in both spectator and participation numbers over the years" said newly appointed CEO, Barry Mocke.

In South Africa, cycling ranks as the 15th most popular participation sport amongst adults, and is the 21st most popular amongst juniors.

The new plan unveiled the organisation's key season events for 2011 including a number of new national and international events in all disciplines: National Road Cycling, Para-Cycling, Track, Mountain Bike and BMX series.

International events such as the Tour of South Africa and some UCI World Cup and Championship events have also been announced.

The planned route of the tour will be unveiled in due course and is scheduled to launch later this year when bookings will open for the February event.

"Cycling South Africa is determined to meet its objectives for the '2020 Vision' by systematically addressing the relevant issues surrounding the sport today. These will necessitate the financial sustainability of the organisation in producing world class athletes, in an environment that is rider centric and aware of its social responsibilities" Mocke remarked

Cycling South Africa's "2020 Vision" will see the organisation becoming a dynamic, successful and highly respected governing body of cycling, at both National and International level. Cycling SA will be engaging in world class practices and playing a leading role in cycling amongst all disciplines, and this will ensure effective and genuine transformation and development.

Cycling South Africa, the governing body of Cycling in South Africa, is a member of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). It is affiliated to the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) as well as the Department of Sport & Recreation.

Cycling South Africa regulates the five major disciplines within the sport, both amateur and professional. These include: Road Cycling, Mountain Biking, BMX Biking, Track Cycling and Para-Cycling.
