Black armbands for Swart

Adelaide - Riders for the US-based HTC-Highroad team wore black armbands during Thursday's third stage of the Tour Down Under to commemorate the death of recent signing Carla Swart in a training accident.

Swart, who was to join the HTC-Highroad women's team later this year, was struck by a truck during a time trial training session near Marquard in the Free State, Cycling South Africa said.

The 23-year-old had lived in the United States for the past eight years but continued to compete for South Africa.

In 2008 she became the first athlete to win collegiate cycling titles in all four disciplines: road, track, mountain biking and cyclocross. She was 10th in the women's road race at last year's World Championships.

Swart represented South Africa at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi where she finished as the highest-placed SA rider in eighth position in the women's road race.
