Corporate Games come to CT

Cape Town - In less than two weeks, Cape Town will welcome over 1 000 athletes into the city for the inaugural Cape Town Corporate Games.

This event is recognised as the world’s largest corporate multisport festival and the Games’ arrival will re-enforce Cape Town’s position as a major world sports capital and centre for business.

The whole region is preparing for the arrival of athletes travelling by road, sea and air. Competitors are flocking to a host of hotels, the UCT campus and a variety of sports facilities for a great weekend of sport, business and tourism in a multisport festival dedicated to Weekend Sports Warriors from everywhere.

Multi-national and national organisations are sending their employees in huge numbers to fly their corporate banners and to challenge one another in many different sports across the weekend.

There are multiple sports on the Official Programme, ranging from traditional racquet sports to golf, soccer and some dramatic dragon boat racing.

And when not competing, athletes are invited to enjoy Celebrations hosted around the City, including the Grand Parade of Athletes and Great Games Party to herald the arrival of the Games into the region.

Gemma Godfrey, COO for the Corporate Games and a global ambassador of the Worldwide Corporate Games Community, has flown in especially to support the event:

“The approaching Games is a very exciting time for us. It will bring together every size and kind of organisation for the everyday athletes who play sport for the fun, health and fitness it provides. All are there to represent their company, institution, club or workplace. They are not elite, but they play hard and enjoy the camaraderie and respect that real competition in sport and life can offer.”

“There is no better to time to get involved. During a period of financial hardship that has shaken the global business market; executive leaders are making important investments of a different kind. Team building, enhancing employee confidence and morale and business networking are receiving growing recognition as fundamental values for a successful business operation during the recovery of the South African and world market.”

Some 20 national and regional Corporate Games take place each year globally. In addition, the last Games to be held in South Africa was the World Corporate Games in 1993 - the first multiracial Games since apartheid featuring Nelson Mandela as its Games Patron.

In Cape Town alone, Sanlam, Pep Stores, Tsogo Sun Hotels, City of Cape Town, Spur, and Turkish Airlines represent but a few of the local organisations who are entering teams in order to capitalise on the benefits that the Games can bring.

Godfrey continued: “We have been delighted with the outstanding quality of the sporting venues here in Cape Town – the facilities are first-rate and in close proximity - we are confident that the participants will thoroughly enjoy their experience.”

The Games will welcome businesses big and small, as well as groups, clubs and the local community to participate and become winners.”

Originating in San Francisco in 1988, the Corporate Games have had worldwide appeal. The project has been held in such diverse places as Budapest and Bilbao, Johannesburg and Geneva, Malaysia and Hawaii, Sydney, Stuttgart and The Hague. It has welcomed more than 1 000 000 athletes into over 50 host cities and over 20 000 organisations worldwide.

Cape Town is expected to attract over 1 000 participants from every corner of South Africa, making it the largest corporate multisport festival of its kind in the continent.

Whether representing a global firm or a local independent, the Games hold something for you. Novices and ex-professionals alike will come together to enjoy this finest of sporting festivals and with no restriction on age, gender or ability, the Games welcomes one and all to reconnect with sport for fun and friendly competition.
