Cape Town - South Africa's Chad Le Clos on Thursday won his second gold medal, with an impressive display of leading from the front to capture the men's 400m individual medley.

The 18-year-old surged out ahead from the first stroke of the butterfly - in which he won 200m gold earlier this week - and romped home in a new Commonwealth Games best of 4:14.25.

The eight-lap race, which also includes backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle, became a battle for the minor medals. England's Joe Roebuck held off Le Clos' team-mate Riaan Schoeman for the silver spot.

An inexperienced field with three teenagers and a veteran in the form of Brian Johns of Canada meant the race was anyone's for the taking.

Johns, now 28, tried to peg back Le Clos in the backstroke with Australia's Thomas Fraser-Holmes but fell off the pace during the breaststroke, as Roebuck and Schoeman came through.

Roebuck then pulled away as Le Clos sprinted for home with Schoeman having to fight off a late challenge from Thomas Haffield of Wales.
