Chappies open for Argus race

Cape Town - There was good news on Tuesday for the 40 000 or so cyclists taking part in this year's Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle tour on March 8.

Co race director Dave Bellairs announced that Chapman's Peak would be open on race day only from 06:00 to 18:00, following lengthy negotiations with Western Cape premier Lynn Brown, the Cape Town municipality and toll road concessionaire Entilini.

The actual race will feature a detour along Boyes Drive to avoid road construction along the beach side road. This change has meant three sharp corners on the down run to Kalk Bay, creating a few challenges for the organisers.

"We have organised extra marshals, straw bales and there is an escape road on the first corner," said Bellairs.
