Cradock – A unique canoe carrying three Chalupsky paddlers spanning two generations will be part of the new world record of 70 K3s entered for this weekend’s Hansa Powerade Fish River canoe marathon in Cradock.
Brothers Oscar and Herman Chalupsky will be paddling with Oscar’s son Luke Chalupsky in a family-affair assault on the popular two-day 82km race from Grassridge dam to Cradock in the Klein Karoo that starts on Friday morning.
This will be Herman’s second year competing in the new class after taking home the K3 title with partners Andre Pohl and Matt Bouman last year.
“It’s the perfect race for a K3,” said Herman Chalupsky. “And it’s the only boat that Oscar can actually fit into,” he laughed.
While the Chalupsky siblings have been household names in canoeing and surfski racing for a number of decades, the emergence of Luke Chalupsky as a talented teenager paved the way for the family-affair K3 concept.
“Luke won’t be able to chirp too much as Herman and I are both 6 foot 4 and he hasn’t quite reached us yet,” laughed Oscar Chalupsky.
The Chalupsky siblings have currently been upping their pace in recent months with Oscar currently racing in Sardinia, Italy and Herman having just claimed a fifth position in the Island Shamaal Mauritius Ocean Classic.
Youngster Luke formed part of a K4 crew that won an international race in Spain recently, which proves he has been making big strides in his desire to break through as a serious canoeist.
“Luke’s ears will definitely start ringing this time round as he will have Oscar hounding him from behind,” quipped Herman Chalupsky.
Although each have been doing various forms of training, they have yet to step into their K3 together and plan on only doing so for the first time on the day of the race.
They won’t be the only K3 on the water made up of one family, as there will also be boats featuring the Hellens and the Von Mansberg families.
The Hansa Powerade Fish river canoe marathon takes place in Cradock on October 1 and 2.
