Brasilia - Brazilian Felipe Franca set a new world mark of 26.89 for the men's 50 metres breaststroke at a meeting in Brazil on Friday.
The previous world best was held by South African Cameron van der Burgh, who clocked 27.06 on April 18 in Durban.
It is the second time in less than a month the record for the event has been bested.
Van der Burgh was first to beat Oleg Lisogor's time of 27.18, which had stood for seven years after the Ukrainian set the record on August 2, 2002 in Berlin.
Franca thus becomes the first Brazilian to set a world record in a 50m pool since Ricardo Prado, in 1982, set a new world mark for the men's 400m medley.
