Port Elizabeth - Cameron van der Burgh felt he was on top of the world when he won the 50m breaststroke again at Telkom's national aquatic championships on Friday night.
His time of 27.24 seconds not only booked his ticket to the World Championships in Shanghai, but he also became the fastest swimmer this season in the world in the event.
It is also not too far from his world record of 26.67 which he swam at the World Championships in Rome in 2009, but that was in the fast swimming suit which was banned from 2010.
The double world champion in this event (short and long course) has been concentrating more on the 100m breaststroke recently, as the 50m race is not an Olympic event.
"I am very happy with the time," said the swimmer from Pretoria.
"I will fly to Dubai to swim in an invitational gala as part as my preparation for the World Championships.
Darian Townsend became the fourth fastest man in the world in the 200m individual medley this season and also added his name to the list for Shanghai.
He won in a fast 1:59.06, but Sebastien Rousseau, with his time of 2:01.42 failed to make the qualifying time by two hundredths of a second.
Charl Crous added his name to the list of swimmers who will travel to the World Championships in Shanghai.
The friendly swimmer from Natal, who struggled with several injuries last year, is back to his best form.
"I studied for a while but have put it on hold till after the Olympics as it is difficult to train hard and study," said Crous.
"I will resume my studies in administration after the Olympics," he added.
Karin Prinsloo of Northern Tigers bagged her fifth title at the championships when she added gold in the 50m freestyle in 26.08 and 50m backstroke in 29.18.
She also won the 100m and 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke.
"I am glad I qualified for the World Championships, but will concentrate on the backstroke as I feel my times are better in the events," said Prinsloo.
It was a disappointing evening for comeback-kid Suzaan van Biljon who won gold in the 100m breaststroke in 1:10.37, but failed to qualify for the World Championships.
