Cape Town - Ernie Els Wines has been awarded the license to produce two SA Rugby wines, in the build up to the Rugby World Cup 2011 which kicks off on September 9 and runs until October 23. The wines will delight wine connoisseurs and passionate Springbok supporters alike, looking for the perfect accompaniment to watch the Boks defend their title in New Zealand.
South African golf legend, Ernie Els, comments: “I have been a keen supporter of Springbok rugby since I was a small boy, and remain as passionate today. It is an honour and a privilege for Ernie Els Wines to have crafted these wines for all Springbok supporters to enjoy.”
Duncan Woods, Brand Manager of the Els Group (SA), continues, “The association between SA Rugby and Ernie Els Wines is extremely exciting and fitting. Both brands are South African icons, committed to the pursuit of excellence in their respective fields. Sport has been an incredible unifier in our country over the past two decades, and it is woven into the fabric of the team at Ernie Els Wines.”
The SA Rugby Red is a Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 blend. Winemaker, Louis Strydom, says: “Brightly tinted with a purple edge, this wine glistens in the glass. Produced from our superlative 2010 vintage, the strong Shiraz component adds spiciness and Cabernet Sauvignon the richness.”
The SA Rugby White is a 2011 Sauvignon Blanc. Strydom describes it as “a fantastic expression of this noble grape variety, revealing flavours typical of grapes harvested from the cooler climates of the Cape. The crisp acidity refreshes the palate and the tropical fruit spectrum is abundant, with a more secondary role played by the grassy, herbal characters common to this grape variety.”
The SA Rugby wines will be available at most major retailers from the beginning of August. The SA Rugby Red will retail from R79.99 and the SA Rugby White from R59.99.
