Awards shortlist unveiled

Johannesburg - The Sport Industry Group is delighted to unveil the official shortlist for the Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards 2012.

Key industry figures gathered at independent adjudicator Deloitte’s offices in Johannesburg for hours of intensive judging across two days, analysing and debating the merits of a record number of entries and producing a list of nominees representing the very best that the South African sport industry has to offer. The entire process was audited by Deloitte to ensure absolute transparency and allow an unsurpassed level of feedback to entrants.

With a record number of entries and higher quality work than ever before, reaching the shortlist for the Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards 2012 represents a stellar achievement. Particular mention must be made of Absa, with the company securing three places from six on the shortlist of the prestigious Award for Best Sponsorship of a Sport Event or Competition, with MTN, Vodacom, SAB and The Sharks amongst the other big-name brands to receive multiple nominations.

However, multi-million rand campaigns were not the only ones to earn praise from the judges, with the likes of Hi-Tec’s sponsorship of The Otter African Trail Run and Central Gauteng Squash’s CG Squash Development community programme also making their respective shortlists, underlining the innovation and creativity stretching throughout the South African sport industry.

The nominees listed below will now eagerly await the announcement of the winners in each category, as well as in the three judges' categories – The Johnnie Walker Lifetime Achievement Award, the SuperSport Outstanding Contribution to SA Sport and Virgin Active Entrepreneur of the Year – at the most respected and prestigious sport industry event in Africa.

The Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards ceremony has swiftly become established as the flagship opportunity for the fast-growing South African sports market to celebrate its work. In 2011 more than 1 000 guests gathered for a star-studded event, including sportsmen and celebrities such as Victor Matfield, Oscar Pistorius, Natalie Du Toit, Linford Christie, Vanessa Haywood and Lucas Radebe.

The 2012 edition of the Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards will once again be held at the stunning Emperors Palace in Johannesburg on 23rd February 2012. Click HERE to book a table now!
