Cape Town - The status of boxing as both a competitive and spectator sport is set to make a comeback in Cape Town with the staging of a high-profile public tournament at the historic 'The Rotunda' at The Bay Hotel in Camps Bay on September 10.
The tournament will feature a total of 10 matches, comprising both amateur and professional bouts, with the main event billed as a national heavyweight contest between Cape Town’s Nkosana Sobethu and Raymond Bloem from Gauteng.
Throwing his weight behind the event is prominent local businessman Andrew Sturrock, Managing Director of sponsoring company Sturrock Shipping and himself a keen amateur boxer. The event itself is being organised by promoter and ex-IBF Continental Champion Commando Kalekuzim who also owns and operates one of the City’s growing number of boxing gyms.
According to Sturrock, the Western Cape lags behind other provinces in terms of interest in the sport, with the Eastern Cape traditionally regarded as the home of South African boxing and Gauteng leading the way with regard to commercial tournaments. Nevertheless, he believes that there is a resurgence of interest in boxing within the Western Cape, in line with international trends.
Sturrock will himself be climbing into the ring on the night as a contestant in one of the amateur supporting bouts.
The tournament starts at 18:30 and is expected to finish at 23:30. Tickets can be purchased at a cost of R100 (general tickets) or R150 (VIP tickets) by contacting Vanessa on (021) 405 8200 or v.voges@sturrockshipping.com.
