Cape Town - South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher has won the Sport24 Performance of the Month award for January 2010, capping a brilliant series against England which culminated in the gritty ‘keeper sharing the man of the series award with England’s Graeme Swann.
Boucher grabbed 38.98% of the 5 584 votes cast with only his captain Graeme Smith coming close to catching him with 30.76% for his 183 in the final Test against England. Golfer Charl Schwartzel was third with 14.81% for his back-to-back domestic wins in the Africa Open and Joburg Open.
Jonty Rhodes wouldn’t have been the first name on anyone’s list if asked for one name you thought would feature in the Sport24 Plonker of the Month category, but not only was he nominated, but he won the award for January.
His perceived paragon of virtue for his much-trumpeted “family life” and frequent exposure in that regard in various religious-themed magazines and so on, was thrown out the window, as the iconic cricketer confirmed that he was in the throes of separation from his wife - and shifting base to be with his new love interest in Cape Town.
Rhodes dived straight in with 48.81% of the 5 584 votes, ahead of Bulls flank Pedrie Wannenberg, (32.23%) who admitted to abusing all of cocaine, ecstasy and alcohol, while Mike Proctor and his fellow former selectors notched up 7.86% of the votes for picking Imran Tahir for the Proteas squad to tour India - against advice that the Lahore-born leggie hadn’t satisfied qualification requirements yet.
