Cape Town - In the first of our Knysna Big 5 participant profiles, we speak to fitness junkie and Women's Health online editor Thamar Houliston...
Name: Thamar Houliston
Age: Just 30
Sex: Female
Amount of Big 5 challenges done: 0
Favourite drink: Shiraz – anything South African
Favourite food: Pad Thai Noodles
Best music to train to: 30 Seconds To Mars (for the uphills), Kings of Leon (for general inspiration) and Dave Matthew Band (for those super chilled runs).
Reason for doing the Big5: It’s a challenge and I need to get back on the trails after breaking my wrist a year ago.
Hoping to achieve in the Big5: Finish with all my bones intact.
Big5 event you are most looking forward to: DueSouth Xterra
Big5 event you are least looking forward to: 85km mountain bike!
How much training have you done: I did the Comrades a month ago and then 3 weeks of training which including 2 mountain bikes, 2 road rides, 4 trail runs and a few spinning sessions at the gym.
The type of training you have done: Minimal
Event you are most proud to have completed: The Wildman Challenge - 150km adventure race which took 36 hours! No we didn’t sleep.
Event you “Blew out” on and why: The Grabouw Xterra 2008. I finished in an hour longer than the year before because it was at least 45 degrees. People were fainting all over the place.
Best place to party in Knysna: Is that a question? Crabs Creek but I also love the Champagne and Oyster Cruise.
On Sunday after the event I will be… Mildly hung-over
Thamar will be writing for Sport24 from the event. Watch out for her from the heart accounts of each event ...
