Oxbow Big Wave Classic (Liz Metcalfe - Cape Sessions)
Cape Town - The Oxbow Big Bay Classic took place in Big Bay at the Lifesaving Club this weekend. It was the first international Windsurfing event of its kind in South Africa in 20 years. The event attracted riders from all over the world including Oxbow’s Kevin Mevissen from the Netherlands.

The event consisted of 2 disciplines:

Slalom World Championships: Riders competed on a course that starts and ends through traditional start/finish lines, following a high speed course marked out by floating buoys.

SA Open Wave Championships: This is the traditional discipline of the Big Bay Classic. Much like surfing, riders are free to express and demonstrate their skills at wave riding and jumping.

Amongst those who came to watch was the Gust Magazines Kids Development Windsurfing Initiative, who experienced live competition at the Oxbow Big Bay Classic for the first time in their lives. These little sailors have big aspirations and an even bigger hunger for learning and progression. 13 year old Sifundo says the best thing about windsurfing is, " I enjoy windurfing, I want to be a professional. I want to help look for other kids to go windsurfing."

Final Results:

Slalom Mens:
Ben van der Steen (NED)
Ross Williams (GBR)
Alberto Menegatti (ITA)

Slalom Ladies:
Lena Aylin Erdal

Wave Mens:

Klaas Voget (GER)
