Johannesburg - Cassius Baloyi took another step towards challenging for another world title when he easily beat Argentinean Roberto Arrieta on points at the Wembley Arena in Johannesburg on Friday night.
Fighting for the first time since his stoppage defeat by Malcolm Klassen when he surrendered his IBF junior lightweight title in April, Baloyi looked sharp as he thudded his left jab into the face of the Argentinean.
Before the bout, Baloyi had promised his fans that they would see vast improvement in his boxing after joining Manny Fernandez.
True to his word, he fought from behind an educated jab and effectively used his reach advantage, something he has not been doing in his last few bouts.
Arrieta, who was fighting for the second time in the country following his defeat by Mzonke Fana three years ago, tried to bore himself inside in order to land his own punches, but was unable to get past Baloyi's jab.
All the judges had the Limpopo-born Baloyi ahead by scores of 120-107 to improve his fight record to 37 wins, four losses and a draw, while Arrieta dropped to 10 defeats and a draw in 53 bouts.
The win should earn Baloyi a title challenge against the winner when IBF champion Robert Guerrero and Fana meet.
The clash between WBF junior featherweight champion Oscar Chauke and Tanzanian Hussein Pazzi which was to feature on the bill was cancelled when the Tanzanian failed a medical test.
