Big money raised for Baby Jake

2011-01-27 22:09

Johannesburg - Retired four-time world champion Jacob "Baby Jake" Matlala has appeared at a boxing tournament held in his honor, easing fears over the health of the popular ex-fighter and smallest world titleholder.

The 1.47-meter (4-foot-10) Matlala arrived at the "Night of the Little Big Men" event at Emperor's Palace on Thursday, on a throne carried by bearers, smiling and waving to fans before walking confidently to his ringside seat.

Matlala, 48, a former WBO, WBU and IBA flyweight and light flyweight world champion, was admitted to an intensive care unit three times last year with complications related to pneumonia.

Promoter Rodney Berman aims to raise $70,000 for the South African, who he says has been left "financially stretched" by his medical bills.

He blew all the cash he earned. Why should ordinary people now give him money ? Surely he can work ?

Macscott, I didn't see anywhere, where you were asked for any contribution towards a Baby Jake fund.He got sick, no medical aid, and that is enough to wipe out any citiizen of this country. You are clearly a non caring person so please go far away.

I've got sympathy for 'Baby Jake', but again, how can somebody, earning thousands of rands from time to time, be without medical aid. And he is not the first well-known celebrity [ and not the last] who waisted the money when there were buckets full. Hope that up-and -coming sport stars will learn from this.

" Complications related to pneumonia' sounds like he got a slow puncture.

With the millions he made previously why did he not invest in a good medical aid ?. He just blew everything then pleaded poverty just like many others in the past.
