Cape Town - South African wheelchair marathon world record holder, Ernst van Dyk, has failed in his bid to win a 10th Boston Marathon title.

Van Wyk, 37, finished in third place in Monday's Boston race, a second behind Japan's Masazumi Soejima who won in a time of 1:18:50.

Australia's Kurt Fearnley finished in second position, in the same time as Van Dyk.

Former SA athlete Krige Schabort finished in fourth.

Van Dyk, who emerged victorious in Boston between 2001-2006 and 2008-2010, set the current world record of 1:18:17 during his victory in 2004.
